On The Move?

We've been living in this house for nine years and twenty-six days.
We were renting next door and always liked the character of this house,
which was empty and very badly neglected for awhile before an auction sign popped up in front of it.
We made the decision to come over to the auction, and possibly make a bid.
When we realized we had made the winning bid (at our very first auction), we were excited, nervous and a little bit shocked.

There was a lot of work to do. But at the time I expected that we would get tradesmen to do most of it.
My husband, however, had other ideas.
He is very handy, and very clever, and worked out how to do pretty much everything all by himself.
Painting...guttering...landscaping...drainage...moving windows...tiling...he's done everything!
The only things left to do are the kitchen and polishing the floors.
Both cause major inconvienence, so we've decided they won't be done until we move out.

Which is the next thing on the cards.
We've always known this is not our 'forever' home.
We'd like more space and more peace and quiet.
So we've been looking for a block of land not too far out of town.
This is where we keep going back to...

Nice, huh?

I'm really hoping this will be where we make our new home.
I can see us living there.
Now I just need the universe to help us make it happen.

Finally!

OMG OMG OMG...
Today our new stove was finally installed.

I say finally because it has been sitting in the kitchen, still wrapped in plastic, for weeks now.
I say finally because the stove we've been living with since we bought this house 8 1/2 years ago was very old and very neglected.
I say finally because only two plates ever worked, the grill never did, and we only used the oven over two years after we moved in when my husband very bravely decided to clean off a gazillion year's worth of gunk.
I say FINALLY because on Monday the last remaining working plate died...and I could have cried.
I just looked at the brand new one, in plastic remember, and said something along the lines of..."Dammit!"

Thankfully I had an electric fry pan, that I'd totally forgotten about.
And my husband had a camp stove in the cupboard that he bought in case we ever went camping, which we haven't.
And I had the microwave.

So we managed.

And I was left thinking, "I bet most people with nice fancy kitchens don't even appreciate what they have!"

But today the electricians finally came and I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a new, working, 4-plates-grill-and-oven, stove!

Right about now you're probably imagining something like this...

I wish!

This is what I have now...

But believe me, it is a million x a gazillion times better than what I've had for the last 8+ years.
Because this is what I had before...

And this is it the day we moved in. It only got worse.....ICK!

So while I dream of a kitchen like this...

OMG, do people really have chandeliers in their kitchen? LOVE!
...this is my reality...

Again, this is it the day we moved in. And there is even less of it now. The 'Happy Days' booth, pool table light and bench in the middle are all gone.  The benches on the other side have also been ripped out. It's a skeleton of what I'm sure was once an ultra modern and cool kitchen when it was all brand new, but the poor thing is now waaaaaaay past its use by date...and still waiting for some loving from us.

My Dear Kitchen,

I am so sorry for the way you have been treated over the years.
The cigarette burns on your cupboard doors must have been very painful.
(Who would do that?)
You've lost a lot of your benches, and your dignity.
But rest assured, the stove is only the beginning.
One day you will be shiny and new again.
I while I would love you so much then,
know this...I love you now, also.
You have served me, and my family, well for more than 8 years.
And I thank you for that.

Yours Sincerely,
Thea

Our Town

I went for a Sunday afternoon stroll today for one hour and took my camera with me.
I thought I'd take you on a tour of our town.
Technically it's a city, but no one really calls it that.
It's not really a country town or a coastal town.
It's just a big town in south east Queensland.
We didn't choose to live here. Well, we had the choice between here or another town that is smaller and further away so I guess we did choose to live here.
We will probably move some day.
But for now, however, it's our town and our home.

This is the view from our place. We see car parks, the back of shops and the main street is just behind the rusty old roof...

There are gaudy shops, beautifully restored houses and a big old state school on top of the hill...

There are lots of lovely Queenslanders...
Grand old homes...

Churches and schools...

Pubs...

Our fire station...

A walking bridge over the railway line...

The old railway station, home of the steam train that we still haven't been on...

It's a hilly town and I love walking along one particular street where I can see the hills in the distance on both sides...

Walking back towards the centre of town, I can see my house from here...

The Civic Centre has just been dolled up...

The library is still daggy...

I love this antique store...

The Council Building has a clock tower and the bells chime every hour...

The gardens and parks are impressive...

Especially the miner's memorial park which has recently been restored...

The main street is quaint...

The main street stage and ampitheatre with it's mosaic mural...

And today is Anzac Day.  We have a memorial lane and this afternoon the gates were covered with new wreaths and the flame was still burning...
