Birthdays

Numbers are funny things.
To me anyhow.
When it comes to birthdays, there are some numbers I like, some I could take or leave,
and some I just plain hate!
Let's break it down (uh oh, I've been watching too much Yo Gabba Gabba again!)

All numbers end in 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9, right?
And so do birthdays, funnily enough.

Birthdays ending with a 0, I do not like!
But it's not actually the 0, it's the first number that freaks me out!
I remember feeling 'funny' when I turned 10, I cried when I turned 20, I had a big party so I wouldn't cry when I turned 30, and I had a 4 year old and a 13 month old when I turned 40 but I still managed to stay up until 3:30am at my teeny tiny party to drown my sorrows.

Birthdays ending with a 1 are almost as bad, or maybe worse, than those ending in a 0.
They come along and slap you in the face and say, 'You're even older than that number you didn't want to turn last year! Bwah hah hah hah.'  That's nasty!

Birthdays ending with a 2 I quite like.  I'm used to the idea of the new decade by then and am settling in nicely and am even feeling young (in that decade).

Birthdays ending with a 3 and a 4 are still all good. I've accepted the first number and feel OK with my age.

Birthdays ending with a 5 come along and things start to get shaky again.  It's another 'milestone' birthday that begins the downhill slide to the next birthday ending with a 0.

Birthdays ending with a 6 and a 7 bearable because saying I'm in my mid 'whatevers' is not too painful.

Birthdays ending with an 8 and a 9 are filled with dread because now I have to say I'm in my late 'whatevers' and we all know, late is never good.  Also, that ugly number with the 0 is just around the corner.

Then we're back to where we started, with a new and bigger number at the beginning.....argh!

I know all the things I'm supposed to be thinking...

"You're only as old as you feel"
"It's only a number"
"It's all in your head"
"What's the alternative?"

Yeah, yeah, I know all that...
but I still feel that way about those numbers.

However, the good new is,
the next birthday coming up (in October) ends with a 2!
That's one of my favourites.
That's one I want to celebrate.

  1. A very interesting and insightful post! I agree with just about all you have written. I think I'll still just be able to enjoy mine that ends in a 5 this year, I hope......

  2. I only like numbers starting with a "1" and ending in an "8". Turning 18 was the best. Everything after that was relatively shite in comparison! x

Just one little comment will make my day.
