Lying God-damn Mirrors

I was at my mums' group earlier this week and one mum said that it was her last hurrah. She was going to eat anything she wanted then she had to lose weight.

She had seen photos of herself and was horrified. I saw the same photos and thought she was beautiful, because she is.

Anyway, I told her I knew how she felt.  That when I look in the mirror I think I look fine, then see a photo and think, "What the hell? My mirror was lying!"

Why do mirrors lie?

Except fitting room mirrors, they never lie. They tell too much truth!

  1. I have been to a dress shop before with shocking mirrors and wondered how their sales go. LOL

But yes, I think I look okay and then I see a photo and wonder what happened between me looking at myself and leaving the house.

I think it has a lot to do with the 2D aspect though. Well that's my story anyway. LOL

  2. What I want to know is why whenever I go to an optometrist the glasses I try on look great, but once I get them home to my own mirror they look ridiculous.

I also want to know why Target mirrors are so mean. I never buy anything from Target. They have mean mirrors.

I think we need to come from the other perspective re. mirrors and photos though. The (kind) mirror is right, how people see us is accurate. It's the damn photo that's wrong. The camera adds 10 pounds, even a still camera.

I went out to a friend's birthday drinks a couple of weekends ago. I had a great hair day, a great makeup day and I really liked my outfit. Sure, I'm not as slender as I'd like to be but I looked as good as I could look.

I see the photos that showed up on facebook and wanted to DIE. Surely I didn't look like the frumpy blob that was on the screen?

Nope, I didn't. I looked great. It was the stupid camera.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  3. Stupid mirrors! I realised the other day that my mirror image looks completely different to what other people see... if that makes sense?? There have been studies done to suggest that people prefer their mirror image because it's familiar. As soon as we see ourselves as we REALLY are (i.e. the flipped around way that other people see us), we think "WTF?!?! YUCK!" even though we usually look fine!

No idea what the camera lens does, but my point is, I love my mirror self approximately 80% of the time, but I only like my photo self about 40% of the time. Whyyyyy?!?!

    Great post xx

  4. What I hate is when I try something on in a store and it actually looks nice. Then I get home, and it's like I'm wearing a freaking different outfit completely. I need me some magical mirrors.

  5. I too never shop in Target due to their mirrors.

Instead I buy everything online from North American companies who have sizes for tall, large framed women.

When I put these on and look in my mirror I look great.

Thanks for the great thoughts. :D

  6. Love this Thea. So true. I haven't bought clothes in over two years now for the fact that I hate those dress shop mirrors so much. I need to start online shopping I think! xx

  7. I couldn't agree more about those lying mirrors. I am always shocked when I see a photo of myself because it sure doesn't look like the 'me' I saw in the mirror. Actually I avoid photos now. I'd rather stick with the lies.

  8. This was me this morning.
mirror: looking quite ok, arms a bit flabbier than I'd like but otherwise quite ok.
Camera( 2 hours later): how did I manage to put on 20kgs in this short space of time! Yuk.

    Why oh why?
